The Audre Lorde Festival – March 2015 at The Watah School
The Audre Lorde Works-In-Progress Festival is named in honour of self-described “black, lesbian, mother, warrior, poet,” African-Caribbean-Americanr/evolutionary Audre Lorde. The 2nd annual festival of The Watah School, Audre Lorde Fest features the trans-disciplinary works-in-progress of almost 40 artists-in-residence sharing almost 35 new works of art, continuing on from the Mikey Smith Raw Works Festival (www.mikeysmithfestival.wordpress.com).
Curated by Watah’s Artistic Director, d’bi.young anitafrika, the showcase will also feature her new play ‘Ssshe Mami Watah’ about the life of a young Black queer womban living in present-day Jamaica named She. Raised in the violence and silence of homophobia and homosexuality, She lives on the margins of church, the GoGo Club and wimmin’s thighs; protected and provoked by the ancient mythic presence of the African snake god/dess Mami Wata. Womban meets church meets queer meets Black meets magick in this cauldron of chaos and salvation.
Audre Lorde (born Audrey Geraldine Lorde, February 18, 1934 – November 17, 1992) was an African-Caribbean-American writer, radical feminist, womanist, lesbian, and civil rights activist. Lorde served as an inspiration to women worldwide, one of her most notable efforts being her activist work with Afro-German women in the 1980s. Her identity as a Black lesbian put her in a unique position to speak on issues surrounding civil rights, feminism, and oppression. She died of breast cancer in 1992, at the age of 58.
